My Melody (also known as My Melo) was first introduced in 1975 when Sanrio wanted to produce a character reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood. Because of the connection to the fairytale character, My Melody was created with a similar red hood for her head.
This kawaii bunny character was born in a magical forest in Mari Land, London. Her initial design included a pink flower, pink nose, and a red hood, though she is now depicted with a yellow nose, pink hood, and white flower. She has quite a few interests, including baking cookies with her mom and crafts.

Since baking is how she spends much of her time, it's no surprise that her favorite food is almond pound cake. My Melody is always seen with her hood on to show appreciation and love for her grandma, who made her initial red hood. Often, My Melody Sanrio will wear a flower or bow near her ear on top of her hood. She is considered Hello Kitty's best friend.

After her "birth" and introduction, Sanrio began offering merchandise featuring My Melody, which became popular quite quickly. In 2005, Kuromi made her first appearance in the Onegai My Melody anime. This character was created to be My Melody's mischievous counterpart. In the show, My Melody Sanrio is tasked with visiting the human world and stopping Kuromi from releasing the Spirit of Dark Power. Initially, the two were friends, but became enemies after a few mistakes on My Melody's part.
In other series, My Melody and Kuromi are friends even with Kuromi's mischievous antics. They are doppelgangers of each other, as Kuromi is a white rabbit/imp and wears a head cover like My Melody. However, Kuromi's head cover is more similar to a black jester-like hat with a pink skull printed on the front.

When it comes to Kuromi's personality, she's similar and quite different from My Melody simultaneously. On one hand, she's girly and also enjoys food (though her favorites are savory options like meat and shallots). Yet, she also has a punk attitude and shows a tough front to everyone (even though she's a softie inside). Though she's the punk version of My Melody, Sanrio Kuromi remains an adorable, spunky character who's fun to watch.
